Testimonials

“It was exciting to be part of such an eclectic and talented group of people – we all came with very different ideas and objectives for our podcasts, and the experience was made much richer for it.  It also felt like a really safe space to try out new things which I think is a credit not only to the participants but also to the tone you as facilitators modelled in the class.” - Patricia Bullock | Edmonton, Alberta | Creator of the Blue Accordion Bistro Podcast

“I loved this workshop. Definitely the best social and artistic experience I've had on Zoom during the pandemic and in a long time! (And it's not easy to work and socialize on Zoom!). It was an extremely precise workshop. Erin and Elia guided us perfectly through the sea of podcasts and podcasting tools. There was a joyful, relaxed and trustful atmosphere. It felt like being part of a family, and this really facilitated the learning and the creation of a podcast. I was impressed by the quality of the podcasts that were made.” - Camilla Bouchet | Stockholm, Sweden | Creator of the Torvald Andersson Podcast

Workshop Format:

Session 1: Introduction to Podcasting
Different types of podcasts, soundscapes, audio art, and experimental narrative storytelling will be introduced through examples.  We will talk about why you may want to tell your story through a podcast and what the unique strengths and challenges of the medium are.  Participants will have an opportunity to brainstorm and discuss an idea for a project they would like to create throughout the workshop. (2 hours)

Session 2: Audio Recording
We will discuss the various recording options that are available to us, with a focus on what we can take advantage of in this time of social distancing.  We will go over some basic tips and techniques to achieve a desired sound and touch base about what types of taping participants will be doing for their audio projects. (2 hours)

Session 3: Editing
Participants can use whatever software makes sense for them to edit their stories.  Things to consider will be financial accessibility and ease of use.  The program we will use for the editing tutorial is Audacity.  We will go over basic tools for audio editing: layering, transitions, levels, and how to effectively use music & sound effects in your piece. (2 hours)

Session 4: Distribution & Listening Party
Now that your podcast is complete, you might want to get it out there!  We will talk about RSS feeds, and how to get your podcast distributed on your favourite podcasting platforms such as iTunes, Spotify, or Stitcher.  We will also have a listening party where participants can have an opportunity to share the pieces that they have created over the four weeks. (2 hours)
